Hydration on long runs is critical, and many distance runners look to hydration belts as a source for carrying water or sports drink while running. I was skeptical when I first got my Helium Fuel Belt. I thought it would bounce and jiggle, and I already have enough natural bounce and jiggle going on, so I certainly didn’t want more. I also think that the hydration packs available tend to be a bit too bouncy for my tastes. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The Helium Fuel Belt has a soft, padded waist belt that fastens with velcro for easy wear and adjustment. The velcro is sturdy, stays put, and allows for perfect adjustment.
I bought the four bottle version of the Helium belt. The four bottles are evenly spaced and keep the belt nicely balanced. However, even as they empty, the belt never feels lopsided. Mostly though, I was surprised as how well the belt stayed in place with minimal bounce. I have been quite comfortable wearing it. The belt is also made of wicking material, so sweat doesn’t collect under it and a side pouch for extra storage is included.
The eight ounce bottles are made of sturdy plastic and have pull tops for easy, no-spill drinking. I find that on cool days, I can get about 14 miles of fluid out the bottles. On warmer days or longer runs, I either also carry a handheld bottle with me, or I stop and refill at drinking fountains. One important note: If you like to use sports drink, be sure to rinse or wash your bottle quickly upon coming home. Otherwise, as I discovered when I forgot to rinse mine once, the pull tops can develop mold very quickly. Ick! Fortunately, new extra bottles are also easily found for purchase.
Overall, I’m quite happy with the Helium Fuel Belt. It has certainly made long runs easier in terms of having hydration handy.
The Helium Hydration belt is available at Road Runner Sports and specialty running stores.
